Jasper Joffe 'Pound Shop Paintings' at Madan Accessories 99p Store, Dalston, London 11 May till 1 June 2010 PV 5pm-7pm Tuesday 11 May

In his first solo show since his "Sale of a Lifetime" Joffe will be showing posh paintings in a working real life pound shop. Disrupted paintings of women pictured for their marriage announcements in 1970s Country Life magazines will be displayed among the shelves of items priced at 99p. The paintings themselves are on canvases Joffe buys in pounds shops, but having painted them they leap in value to £3000. By inserting expensive, luxury, non-functional objects made in London, among items manufactured in China which are cheap, useful, and throw-away, Joffe asks what is worthwhile. Using the pound store as an exhibition space allows both the paintings and the shop to be seen by new audiences. Art collectors can experience the joys of the 99p store, while pound shop patrons will see unexpected oil paintings on the walls. The paintings themselves, relics of an antiquated class system, in an old fashioned medium, complete the juxtaposition.
